Today we continue digging into the personal finances of the 2024 presidential candidates.
How Vivek Ramaswamy Became A Billionaire
Standing in a packed New Hampshire restaurant, Vivek Ramaswamy, the fresh-faced Republican shaking up the 2024 presidential race, is making a case for unifying a bitterly divided nation. The secret, he insists, is as American as apple pie: capitalism, reports John Hyatt.
“Democrats and Republicans alike, we tend to be more proud of a country when we’re all making more money in that country,” he tells 100 or so diners enjoying turkey sandwiches and diet Cokes. “We don’t have to flog ourselves for capitalism. Stop apologizing for capitalism. We should embrace capitalism.”
Ramaswamy certainly has. At 38 years old, the biotech investor and “anti-woke” warrior is worth more than $950 million. His net worth was over $1 billion about two weeks ago, making him one of the 20 youngest billionaires in the country, before a downturn in the market pulled him just under the billion-dollar threshold, according to Forbes’ calculations. Still, he appears to be the second-wealthiest person competing in the Republican presidential primary, behind only Donald Trump (whose net worth Forbes last pegged at $2.5 billion).

Here’s How Much 2024 Presidential Candidate Tim Scott Is Worth
Unlike some of his competitors for the presidency, Tim Scott inherited neither a great fortune nor a prominent last name. Instead, he grew up in poverty. Nonetheless, the senator managed to start his own business, build a small real estate portfolio, win elections and become a millionaire—proving that the American Dream is still possible, even for a poor, Black kid from South Carolina, reports Kyle Mullins.
Scott got his big break in 2010, when he won election to the U.S. House—guaranteeing him a $174,000 annual salary, nearly triple the $60,000 he had paid himself as the owner of an insurance business. He took office in January 2011 and sold his firm for more than $500,000 three months later. Soon he was writing books, including two alongside former South Carolina Rep. Trey Gowdy, and eventually earned more than $700,000 as an author between 2017 and 2022.
Nikki Haley’s Debate Performance Might Resonate With Women, But Camaraderie Won’t Win The Republican Primary
On the Republican presidential primary debate stage last week, former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley created moments of camaraderie with women viewers, whether intentionally or not, as she stood in light blue among a sea of dark suits. In addition, while little of what she said was new, much of what she chose to emphasize aligns with messaging meant to appeal to a class of more moderate women voters who are unlikely to support Republican frontrunner Donald Trump, according to Kelly Dittmar.
A Draft Of TikTok’s Plan To Avoid A Ban Gives The U.S. Government Unprecedented Oversight Power
TikTok’s Chinese parent company ByteDance has spent years negotiating a national security agreement with the Biden Administration that would avoid a ban on the short video app in the United States. Now, a draft of that agreement from summer 2022 reveals just how much control ByteDance may have to give the U.S. government. Were it to be finalized, the agreement would provide the government near unfettered access to internal TikTok information and unprecedented control over essential functions that it does not have over any other major free speech platform, reports Emily Baker-White.

When Will Trump And Fulton County Defendants Go To Trial? Here’s What We Know
Fani Willis, the district attorney in Fulton County, Georgia, and the 19 defendants she indicted for their roles in trying to overturn the 2020 election—including former President Donald Trump—are arguing in state and federal court over when and where the sprawling case should go to trial; at least one defendant is already set for an October trial, reports Alison Durkee.
Trump 14th Amendment: New Hampshire GOP Feuds As States Grapple With Disqualifying Trump From Ballot
Republicans in New Hampshire are sparring over whether former President Donald Trump can be disqualified from the state’s 2024 ballot under the 14th Amendment, as states begin to wrestle with the issue of whether Trump should be kept on the ballot given his role in the January 6 riot, reports Alison Durkee.
